Solid geometry selection defines the machining area or path from the faces and edges of a solid model. Choose the method according to the shape to machine and the geometry available for selection.
The methods below create different results from the same model. Check the generated profiles, islands and machining levels before programming the cycle.
Bottom Face
Select a flat pocket bottom to create the pocket and recognize its islands automatically. The bottom altitude comes from the selected face; the start altitude is determined from the stock. Use this method for a pocket with a selectable flat bottom, especially when islands must be avoided.
Profile
Create a closed pocket profile from solid edges when the shape has no bottom face or its bottom is not flat, such as a through pocket. Define the required Bottom Z and check the resulting boundary. This method does not support undercut shapes.
Silhouette
Calculate the material to preserve at a specified altitude, using the stock as the pocket. The calculation considers material above that altitude. Use it for facing or external contour roughing; it is not intended for closed interior pockets.
Silhouette Pocket
Use the silhouette calculation to find pockets inside the calculated islands. This specialized method supports undercut shapes and can help when Bottom Face or Profile cannot produce the required pocket. Select the required detected profile, or all detected profiles.
Edges Path
Select edges for Standard cycles on non-linear or complex curved surfaces where the other selection methods are unsuitable. Use the detailed guide for edge-based paths along surface borders, fillets or transitions.
